Do you find yourself searching the fridge or cupboard for food, and constantly avoiding protein? (The thought of eggs, meat, chicken or fish definitely doesn’t make my mouth water, and I’m sure the hardcore vegans will admit that sometimes lentils or beans just don’t hit the spot)
That’s my life. I struggle to eat a lot of protein on a good day, and while being pregnant I want it even less. Eventually my partner started to worry about me and took matters into his own hands by getting me some protein powder. Protein in your diet is essential for building and repairing cells. It’s also really important for pregnant women.
I started trying out Vega Protein & Greens Berry. It’s plant based protein which is pretty cool (the main ingredient is pea protein), with no sugar added. One measuring cup of it (probably a few Tbsps) has 20 grams of protein which is great. It’s also gluten free. It’s still really sweet though because they add Stevia (I’ve never been a fan of the Stevia aftertaste) so I usually just use half a cup and mix it with a lot of other healthy but yummy ingredients. That way you don’t really taste the protein powder.
Here’s my go-to smoothie:
- Vega Protein & Greens protein powder (1/2 a measuring cup)
- Blueberries (a healthy handful)
- 1/2 a banana
- spinach (add lots, you don’t even taste it)
I love this mix because you’re getting at least 12 grams of protein, all sorts of great nutrients (fibre, magnesium, folate, vitamin K, potassium, vitamin C, etc), and it tastes good.
I just blend it all in my Nutribullet and I’m good to go. I also really like sticking it in the freezer after mixing so it freezes and gets all slushy. Sometimes I’ll add some chia seeds in there too if I feel like it.
What’s your go-to smoothie?
I’d be keen to try out a different Vega flavour, such as vanilla, to see if the sweetness is a bit more chill. They also have a few different variations of Protein Powders and meal replacements I want to try. So far the ease of mixing and even transporting my shake, has been a lifesaver!
